Japanese Daikon Salad Recipe (keto)

Daikon salad is an excellent pallet cleanser and adds a slight peppery taste, making it the perfect spring and summer salad.

When I made homemade Kimchi, I was first introduced to Daikon radish, which means “big root” in Japanese.

At that point, I had never tried a daikon radish before, so I guessed it would have a profound spicy flavour.

I was wrong, as a daikon radish is the opposite of the red radish we buy at the grocery store.

You’ll find the red radish with a high flavour profile and the Daikon with a low flavour of Daikon radish.

Just the other day, I thought that I bet if I boiled a cubed daikon radish until tender, it would make a delicious keto mashed potato.

The mashed Daikon with gravy recipe idea is next on my list, and if it works, that will make Mrs. CBB happy.

Today I’m taking you on a journey to make a delicious crunchy Japanese Daikon Salad.

It has hints of fresh ginger, garlic, sweet red bell pepper, sesame oil, and optional bocconcini balls.

Daikon Radish at Food Basics

Daikon radish is a Japanese white radish with a light peppery taste but nothing as strong as a red radish.

Before eating a daikon radish, you need to peel the outer layer off precisely as you would with a potato.

Other names you may find a daikon radish at the market or Canadian grocery store might be any of these.

Typically we buy ours from Food Basics, but I found them at Zehrs wrapped in plastic wrap with the other vegetables.

Naturally grown in South Asia and now across the globe, daikon radish is becoming a favourite.

Common Daikon Radish Questions

Below are some of the questions Mrs. CBB and I wanted to find out. Now I can answer the questions for all of you.

Can you eat Daikon raw?

Once you take the peeling off, you sure can, similar to a potato but not as thick.

What does daikon radish taste?

Daikon radish is super crunchy with a light peppery flavour and nothing like a red radish.

What is the difference between a red radish and a daikon?

The shape and colour are both differences between the white and red radish.

There is a distinct shape for the red radish, small and round, whereas the white is long and chunky.

The overall main difference is the flavour, and not even close to the red radish.

How long will a daikon radish last in the refrigerator?

I’ve kept Daikon in the fridge for a minimum of a few days as they compare to a potato that gets wrinkly.

Can daikon radish make you poop?

The daikon radish can make you poop as it has an explosive device inside.

If you are unsure whether to eat a daikon white radish, ask your doctor.

I added Italian mini bocconcini cheese balls for the second daikon salad that I made.

I also added tuna salad on the side with the daikon salad, which didn’t disappoint.
