Thrifty Father’s Day Ideas To Celebrate Dad

I can think of many Father’s Day Ideas to share, so today, I’ll share our family traditions.

You don’t need to celebrate Father’s Day at a restaurant, nor do you need to buy greeting cards or gifts.

However, many families celebrate Father’s Day by going the whole nine yards.

Father’s Day ideas include traditions such as eating at a local family restaurant.

Every family celebrates differently based on circumstances such as a divorce, as I did as a child.

Today, I’d like to discuss thrifty Father’s Day ideas and celebrating dads in heaven.

Father's Day Ideas 2022
Frugal Father’s Day Ideas

Fashionably Late Father’s Day Ideas

I admit that I had to Google what day is Father’s Day 2022 because I’ve been so busy.

That’s not an excuse, wait a minute, yes, it is, and I’m not proud of my lack of organizational skills.

If you ask Mrs. CBB how on time I am when it comes to special occasions, she will tell you I’m horrible.

Walking through the Dollar Store, I bought my stepdad a Father’s Day card that won’t arrive on time.

As I walked down the aisle where the Father’s Day cards were located, Mrs. CBB laughed.

She knew I was looking for a card to send my stepdad and that it would arrive fashionably late.

I’ve pledged to improve at remembering and ensuring that my mobile calendar is up to date.

When Is Father’s Day 2022?

Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday in June and has been ever since President Richard Nixon signed a law in 1972.

Canada also celebrates Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June, as do many countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom.

As mentioned, my Father’s Day card for my stepdad is still on the dining room table.

The funny part is that my mum always sends us cards ahead of any special occasion.

I’ll admit it makes me jealous of how organized she is, although she stocks up on greeting cards.

Cheap Father’s Day Cards

She says that the local second-hand shops always have gift cards cheaper than the pound store (Dollar Store in the UK.)

If you thrift shop in Canada, you already know that they sell greeting cards for less than a dollar.

How can I be so organized with my finances and can’t even send a card or remember a special occasion?

Easy, it’s not something I think about until the day or a few days before. Sometimes I don’t remember until our son brings a craft home from school.

If you work in retail, you know that on Christmas Eve, the mall crawls with men shopping for everyone on their list.

Homemade Cards: Father’s Day Ideas

Although I don’t care for store-bought cards or gifts from my wife or son for Father’s Day, I appreciate the thought.

Our son is still young, and at school, he has always made a craft for Father’s Day and other special occasions.

Before he started school, he would make crafts with Mrs. CBB for holidays because it was fun to do.

A craft centre in our kitchen has a Dollar store with the essentials for making just about anything for art time.

We still carry that tradition of holiday crafts instead of buying unique occasion cards.

Buying Something Small For Father’s Day

As for Father’s Day gifts, our son and Mrs. CBB will buy something small that I need from Amazon.

Online shopping is easier for Mrs. CBB since we only have one vehicle, and Amazon is convenient.

She hasn’t driven for years since we always shop together, yet she does have her licence.

The element of surprise with Amazon is fantastic since the gift already comes in a box or post bag.

I’m not sure what our son picked for me from Amazon, but I know that I will need it.

We figure if we need to buy something, then it’s an expense we would have made anyways.

Cool Father’s Day Ideas For Small Gifts

  1. COCHOA Men’s Real Leather RFID Blocking Stylish Bifold Wallet with 2 ID Window (Crazy Horse, Cognac)
  2. Fathers Day Sand Timer Gift from Daughter Son Wife Fathers Day Funny Gift Ideas (this may seem funny, but many men, including our son and myself, spend too much time in the bathroom)
  3. INBLUE Men’s Leather Braided Bracelets with 2-6 Custom Name Beads Engraved Customized Gifts ( I have this in silver, which I received for Christmas from Mrs. CBB)

Are You Rich, Mrs. CBB?

There never should be expectations, but society has marketed its way into our lives and always will.

Since our son is autistic, we explain to him what special occasions are about and the meaning.

After school yesterday, one of our son’s friends asked Mrs. CBB if we were rich.

That came out of nowhere because we often go together to pick our son up from school.

Rich isn’t about money, Mrs. CBB explained to her.

Being rich is about having a loving family, food on the table, clothing on our bodies and a roof over our heads.

Father’s Day Ideas For Dads In Heaven

Father's Day Ideas include a trip to the the Cemetery.
Visting dad at the Cemetery for Father’s Day

Both Mrs. CBB and I have lost our fathers to major heart complications but at different times in our lives.

I was 17 when my dad died in hospital after heart surgery, and Mrs. CBB’s father passed away a few years ago.

It never gets easy to lose a parent when they’ve passed, no matter your age.

Since my dad passed away when I was young, he will always be a memory in my life.

When Father’s Day would come around, we’d always go home to celebrate with Mrs. CBB’s father.

Today, we have a memorial cabinet we light every Sunday as our son asks about him.

Whenever we visit Mrs. CBB’s hometown, we visit the cemetery to see him and pray.

Our son likes to sit with him and talk like he sends messages to heaven.

Best Father’s Day Ideas For Dads Who Live Far Away

My stepdad has been in my life since I was two years old and taught me life’s basics.

He also knows I’m ridiculously late sending notes, crafts or cards to the UK, so I do the next best thing.

If you guessed that I made a phone call, you’re correct.

Hearing my parent’s voices on the telephone will never match what a greeting card will ever do.

Every few months, I buy a calling card for $5 a the corner shop to ring my parents on their landline.

Both Mrs. CBB and I agree that having the opportunity to call and have a loved one answer is a blessing.

We spend so much time with our son because we know the effect of losing a parent.

Father’s Day ideas we create together are to last a lifetime so he can pass them on to his family.

The future is challenging for us since we had our son just before 40, whereas his friend’s parents are younger.

I hope we can be around to see him grow through life, even if we are in a wheelchair.

Father’s Day Ideas For Brunch Or Dinner For Two

Since Father’s Day is always on a Sunday, we prefer to have brunch rather than dinner.

When we cook for special occasions besides Christmas, we only cook for two adults.

Our son will not eat anything but the following foods:

  • Pizza Thin Crust Presidents Choice or Dominos
  • Hot Dogs microwaved with no bun or condiments
  • Grilled Cheese with Kraft cheese slices and butter
  • Yogurt Drinks
  • French Fries
  • Cucumbers (no skin or seeds)
  • Apples, Strawberries, Watermelon (no seeds), Blueberries, Raspberries, Banana
  • Plain Chips or Dorritos
  • Buttered Popcorn
  • Nacho Cheese Fish Crackers
  • Ice-Cream
  • Chocolate Milk
  • Cookies that include chocolate
  • Freezies

As for candy, gum, pop or juice other than apple, he does not eat it and has zero interest.

However, like his mother, he likes chocolate and prefers it over candy.

Surprisingly he likes strawberries dipped in dark chocolate since he says it’s healthy.

His picky eating is not due to him not liking certain foods; instead, it’s a sensory disorder.

Father’s Day Food Traditions With Our Dads

Now that our son is registered in Ontario with Autism, that opens up the gates for therapy.

On Father’s Day, we make the last supper Mrs. CBB made for her father before he passed away.

Our Father’s Day ideas included incorporating food that our dads loved to eat.

Eating out was not something we did as it was too expensive and still is even in Canada.

Meals and desserts were always homemade by mum as neither my dad nor stepdad cooked.

As my stepfather is still alive, he gets the Father’s Day phone call and loves traditional British foods.

My father was the same as most people in the UK regarding a traditional Sunday dinner.

The vegetables tend to change more than anything on this menu; for example, mum might have swede, also known as rutabaga or neeps.

Father’s Day ideas in Canada include something I love to eat and the last meal Mrs. CBB made for her father.

Again, eating out was a luxury in our families, especially since our fathers were very ill.

Even as a child, homemade meals were all she’d ever known apart from Chinese food buffets.

Her parents loved Chinese food, which is inexpensive to enjoy as a buffet with a variety of dishes.

Oddly enough, when Mrs. CBB and I were married, we had a private room at a popular Chinese restaurant with a buffet.

Father’s Day Brunch For Me

Below is our Father’s Day brunch that we make that includes leftovers for two days.

Mrs. CBB brought the following dinner to her father in the hospital, and he dove right in.

We’ll never forget the love in his smile to see real home-cooked food.

  • Meatloaf with homemade gravy
  • Rapini
  • Boiled Potatoes
  • Apples, Bananas and Grapes

Father’s Day Ideas For The Family

Picking strawberries for Father’s Day 2022.

Besides making crafts for Father’s Day, we’ve started to incorporate visiting the community garden.

Our son loves to garden, which is not surprising since we both do, and his grandfather did.

Each year our son picks a vegetable or fruit that he wants to take care of for the season.

Last year he grew strawberries in our hanging baskets, and the year before that, pot potatoes.

Gardening is a fun activity we do with our son so he can pass it along to his family or continue the tradition.

It’s also far cheaper to grow organic vegetables than buy them at the grocery store.

For the 2022 season, he is growing raspberries since he now loves smoothies.

Going To The Beach With Dad

Spend time at the beach with family.

Both Mrs. CBB’s father and I love going to the beach as I grew up living by the sea.

You’d often find me learning how to surf when the waves were high or swimming with my parents.

Although our son struggles to put his head under water, he loves being in the water.

He also loves making sandcastles with me, burying me under the sand, and laughing about it.

We try to visit different beaches every summer and on Father’s Day based on the weather.

Playing Soccer At School

Father's Day Ideas include playing soccer with my son
Playing Soccer With My Son For Father’s Day 2022

Soccer is one game our son took to right away and has played for many years.

I love soccer (football in the UK), so if we have time on Father’s Day, we head to the park and play.

Going to the beach typically takes up a significant portion of our day, and eating brunch and cleanup.

With the price of gas in Ontario over $2.00 a litre, we might skip the beach and head to the playground.

Free Splash Pad Fun With Dad

Another free activity is a short drive to the splash pad, where both of us run around and play.

Nothing beats seeing our son smile, and he loves spending time with both of us.

I’m sure there will be a time when he wants to hang out with his buddies, as I did growing up.

In the meantime, we want to soak up as much time as possible, bringing him up in a loving home.

Father’s Day Ideas Without The Cost

You can't get back time so use it to spend time with the people you love. Father's Day Ideas might include a phone call or time with dad.
Time Is Precious, So Use It Wisely

On Father’s Day, I don’t want to go to Wonderland or visit places with an entry fee.

All I want to do is eat good food and spend time with my family making memories.

Now that I’m in my 40s, memories mean more to me than anything since my dad passed away at 48.

A few more years and I’ll be the same age, and in the back of my mind, it scares me to death.

I know one day it will happen, so I try to enjoy the present and let the future play out as it’s meant to be.

If you came here looking for inexpensive Father’s Day Ideas, the best one I can give you is time.

Spend time with your dad, stepdad, or a person who you consider plays a role in your life as a dad.

Happy Father’s Day 2022!

Mr. CBB
