An easy, soft glazed cake that tastes like a combination of the apple fritter and dutchie donut from the original Tim Hortons.
I never set out to make a copycat Tim Hortons apple fritter or dutchie, but according to Mrs. CBB, this is close to what I achieved.
Considering I’ve never tasted a dutchie donut before but loved the apple fritter, I can lean more toward that side of her review.
I’ll have to trust her since she has experience with the original Tim Hortons baking in the 90s.
I hope you enjoy a trip down memory lane, and let me know what you think of my Glazed Apple Fritter Dutchie Cake.

Original Tim Hortons 1964
On May 17, 1964, the first Tim Hortons opened a coffee shop on Ottawa street in Hamilton, Ontario.
Today, it is a coffee shop and museum filled with classics from mugs, uniforms, plaques, memorabilia, and photos.
One dozen donuts cost a mere $1.25 and $0.60 for a large coffee which seems cheap today, but we’re returning to the ’60s.
Tim Hortons Dutchie Donut
The dutchie is a Canadian doughnut popularized by the Tim Hortons chain. It is a square, yeast-lifted doughnut containing raisins that is coated with a sugary glaze.
The dutchie was one of two original baked goods that had been available on Tim Hortons’ doughnut menu since the chain’s inception in 1964

Apple Fritter From 1960’s Tim Hortons
The photo below was taken in Hamilton, Ontario, from the Tim Hortons museum, where the first store had opened.
If you look closely, you’ll notice the massive size of the apple fritter donut compared to the frozen donut you get today.
At the top left of the photo is a tray of dutchie donuts as they were homemade by a baker.
According to my wife, the donuts you get at Tim Hortons today are nothing like in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s when they were made in-house.
You would never find uniform apple fritter donuts as they varied in size but were always big and filled with fresh-cut apples and cinnamon.
Mrs. CBB worked for Tim Hortons for many years as a baker, drive-thru, and front-end staff.
She spent many nights with the donut baker as she made the muffins and knows the hard work that went into making what used to be premium donuts.
Unfortunately, I didn’t taste these donuts as I moved to Canada in 2007, and the frozen donut had already been implemented.

You’ll need an 8-inch square baking pan buttered and lined with parchment paper.
I used an 8-inch square foil pan from the dollar store, which I buttered and did not line with parchment as I cut the sides down after the cake cooled.

- Sprinkle one teaspoon of cinnamon over the top.
- Gently swirl the cinnamon into the batter using a knife to create a marble effect.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
How To Make Vanilla Glaze
- In a small bowl, add the confectioner’s sugar and vanilla extract.
- Start by adding two tablespoons of heavy cream and add the third tablespoon if needed to make a glaze that will drizzle.
- Poke small holes in the cake when it comes out of the oven, and then pour the glaze all over it and let it cool.
