Free Counting Eggs Printable Book

Our counting eggs printable book is a fun way to practice early math skills! If you and the kids enjoy it, be sure to browse through the ever-growing collection of free printable books!

I love using emergent readers with young children! The books let kids be illustrators (and sometimes authors!), which makes them even more engaging for the kids.

With this Easter printable reader, preschoolers will love joining the little yellow chick as they count all the eggs in the book. What a simple way to work on both literacy and math concepts with your students.

You can grab your own copy of the Easter printable book at the very bottom of the post. Two versions of the reader are available in the free printable.

Materials for the Easter Eggs Emergent Reader

You don’t really need much to get the Easter printable book ready to go. Here’s what we used:

And here are a few more materials to use with the eggs printable book if you’re printing out the black and white version. Or maybe you want to extend the book with some additional activities. See what you have around the house or classroom – sometimes I find that an idea will spark based on gathering a few extra materials and going from there!

How to Assemble the Counting Eggs Printable Book

The easiest way to get started with the egg book is to print it out, staple it, and begin. If you need a smidge more detail, here you go:

  • First, you’ll need a copy of the counting eggs book. Grab yours from the bottom of this post.
  • Print out however many copies of the book you need.
  • Then, fold each page in half along the black line, making sure that the pictures are facing out.
  • Next, place the pages in order with the folded edges to the right-hand side.
  • Finally, staple along the left-most edge of the stack.

And that’s it! I think it takes longer to type out how to assemble the book than it does to actually put the book together! If you want to see it in action, check out this quick video:

Depending on the use and the kids, sometimes I will cut and laminate the pages separately, or even punch holes in the spine and string it together with yarn or ribbon. You can get the kids involved helping with this part!

Using the Easter Printable Book With Your Students

When you download the printable, you will find two versions: one is colorful, and the other black and white. There are several ways to use each version, and while you might have your own in mind, here are some of the ways I usually use printable books with my kids.

Black and White Version

The black and white version of the egg book lets the kids be the illustrators. They get to color in the chicks and add the eggs to each page. The hands-on time spent creating their own books can go a long way in helping the children understand counting.

They’ll have fun drawing out the appropriate number of eggs and then decorating them with crayons or markers. You could even use little Easter egg stickers for this part.

Nearly any materials you have or want to use here will do the trick: watercolors, stamps, fingerprint “eggs”. You could even try making little potato stamps with mini potatoes for the kids to use!

Full Color Version

The full color version of the egg counting book is totally ready for you to print out and use. This is a great ‘teacher version’ of the book to guide the kids from. Or you can print these out for your kids if you simply want them to have reading and counting practice.

Sometimes I like to cut the pages apart after printing them and then I laminate each page. The pages can be hole-punched and tied together with yarn, or used in a number of different ways. Try some of these:

  • Dry erase markers to trace the words and eggs
  • Play dough to form over the eggs
  • Counting beads or buttons to place on the eggs
  • Tongs to place chocolate eggs over the egg illustrations

What do the Kids Learn With Printable Books?

Printable books are simple to prepare and use with kids, and they really pack a punch when it comes to learning. They practice reading, yes, but they can also touch on:

  • Math skills (as with this counting book)
  • Fine motor skills when using the books with manipulatives
  • Creative skills when coloring and drawing
  • Basic book knowledge (front and back of the book, cover page, title, author)
  • Directionality (we read left to right, top to bottom)
  • Concept of word
  • Punctuation
  • Sight words
  • Letter-sound correspondence
  • Context cues
  • Color identification

That’s pretty impressive for one printable activity!
