Get ready to light up your history books, because it’s Women’s History Month!
Boy, does California have a long list of bad@$$ women who’ve made history! It’s women have played an important role in shaping the state and the world. From the early Native American tribes to the Spanish colonization to the gold rush and beyond, California has been shaped by women who have fought for their rights, advocated for change, and made significant contributions to their communities.
First up, let’s look at the ever popular Dolores Huerta, the co-founder of United Farm Workers of America with Cesar Chavez. Not only did she fight for the rights of farm workers, women, and immigrants, she worked tirelessly to organize boycotts, strikes, and other nonviolent protests to improve the conditions of workers in California and beyond.
And let’s not forget about Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Talk about breaking barriers – this physicist and astronaut blasted off into the unknown, showing us all that anything is possible. She may have been in zero-gravity, but her accomplishments are out of this world! She inspired a generation of girls and women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math, and her legacy continues to inspire new generations of scientists and explorers.
Other notable California women include Joan Didion, a writer and journalist whose work has captured the essence of California culture and history, and Hattie McDaniel, the first African American woman to win an Academy Award, who lived in Los Angeles for many years. These ladies paved the way for others to follow in their footsteps, and for that, we say Thank You!
And of course, just from Fresno, we have incredible women like; Laura Berg, Deborah Blum, Lorraine Collett, Farrah Franklin, Zoila Frausto Gurgel, Jaime Hipp, Debora Iyall, Joanna Kerns, Emily Kuroda, Sharon Leal, Miranda Rae Mayo, Aari McDonald, Audra McDonald, Barbara Morgan, Nicole Row, Kate Scott, Ashley Swearengin, Heidi Watney, Susan Montgomery Williams just to name a few!
These women, along with countless others, have left an indelible mark on California’s history and culture. They fought for their rights, broke down barriers, and showed us all that there are no limits to what we can achieve. So let’s raise a glass to all the amazing California women who have made history and continue to do so. You’re an inspiration to us all!
